Disclaimers, etc.

  1. The following are one set of steps that you may use to install a Vette Essentials' steering wheel decal on a C5 Corvette. Alternatives may exist.
  2. Use these instructions at your own risk and be careful not to damage your interior or the decal.
  3. Vette Essentials highly recommends that you install the steering wheel decal in a warm environment, such as by positioning your Corvette so that its steering wheel is in direct sunlight; this will permit the adhesive on the decal to adhere properly to the steering wheel. Installation should be performed at a temperature of 65 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer. Installation during cold weather conditions can cause poor adhesion between the decal and the steering wheel, although if you install the decal in temperatures below 65 degrees Fahrenheit you can use a hair dryer to heat the surface of the steering wheel; do not, however, use a heat gun for this purpose.
  4. Neither Vette Essentials nor anyone affiliated with it or the formation of these instructions takes any responsibility for the results or effects achieved by following these instructions.

Printing these instructions

You might find it might helpful to print these instructions so that you can take them out to work on your 'Vette. For most folks, these instructions should print out in a readable form simply by choosing "File" and then "Print" on your web browser. Alternatively, you may save some office supplies and some stress if you print these directions in landscape orientation. For those not familiar with that, at the top of your browser choose "File", then choose "Print." A window opens up with print options, and one option should say "Properties." Choose that "Properties" option, and there now will be several tabs to choose from -- select the one that says "Paper." This will bring up several options about the paper, one of which that is "Orientation." Click on "landscape," click "okay" once which will take you back to the print window, and then hit "okay" again. This should start the printing process.

Let's get started

Here's our tools, from left to right:
  1. a few Q-tips
  2. rubbing alcohol
Step 1, stock decal surface observations: The center of the basic stock steering wheel. Say goodbye, as soon it will be much nicer looking! The picture labels the flag tips because they are to be used for your guide when aligning the decal to the steering wheel surface, as shown below.
Step 2, surface preparation: Apply a generous amount of the rubbing alcohol to an end of the Q-tip and clean the entire flag emblem on the surface of the steering wheel airbag; use more than one Q-tip if necessary. When finished, allow surface to dry for 5 minutes. (Also, do NOT use lacquer thinner for cleaning the surface.)
Step 3a, decal application: Remove the backing off of the decal, preferably by pulling at a sharp angle from each corner, where the pulling is away from the tip of the flag as shown. Repeat for both top corners of the decal until the entire backing is removed.
Step 3b, decal application: Turn the adhesive side of the decal toward the steering wheel surface, and align the top outer tips of the flags on the decal with the flag tips on the wheel surface, as identified above in Step 1. Once you have the placement where you desire, then apply firm pressure to the transparent protective covering that is still on top of the decal. Note that the picture includes the "PEWTER" label solely for illustration, and since it is not desired that this color-identifying decal remain on the wheel, then do not apply pressure to the cover that overlies it. Wait at least 15 minutes before proceeding with the next step.
Step 3c: Remove the front transparent protective cover from the decal, pulling each top corner down at a similar angle as used for removing the protective backing in Step 3a. This picture illustrates the top right corner.
Step 3c, continued: Complete the removal of the front transparent protective cover from the decal. This picture illustrates the top left corner. If your decal included a color-identifier, remove that from the steering wheel surface. Do not touch the surface of the flag decal for at least 24 hours.
Step 4: Stop and admire your new custom steering wheel decal. Next, ask yourself what else you need from Vette Essentials to further enhance your Vette!!

That's all folks. Peace.
